little girl lost

22 Aug

The room a swirl of dark confusion amid
blinking lights
beeping alarms
palpitating monitors matching my heart
IV poles trailing multiple lines
tethered

to the terrified girl

writhing

frightful visions of vomit and
shelob’s offspring
dangling
dropping
drooling
crawling
clawing

little girl lost

drowning

hopelessness and fear rising
a deluge of despair
a smothering mabbul

I stand at bedside
trying to calm
to comfort
but I feel the waters lapping at
my own heels
what to say
what to do
how to be

lost.
lost.

Then

quiet presence enters
a greater work is done
no loud command needed
no dramatic stand against raging seas
no tides dramatically reversed
for as terrified face is cradled in loving hands
the storm is stilled
by gentle
caress.

Breathe, child, breathe.

And she does.

And so do I.

for katie

breathe child
